PTSD and Application in Criminal Court from an Expert’s Perspective – Dr. Ryan Hall

The purpose of this lecture is to discuss concepts of PTSD and how it may be applied in a criminal/legal setting. The attendees will be educated about how the condition is diagnosed, factors that are often applicable to criminal court situations, areas of agreement and disagreement between experts, how to approach a case in order to be able to provide supporting documentations for experts’ testimony.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) with a Screening of the Documentary Film Resilience with Ann Pimentel-Kerr

Ann Pimentel-Kerr will be leading a screening and discussion of the film Resilience.  The film delves into the science of the original study and encourages discussion about ACEs and Resilience by showing examples of communities that have piloted programs using trauma and ACEs informed therapy.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) with Dr. Candice Jones

 Dr. Candice Jones will discuss the science behind the study of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and how understanding the relationship between childhood traumas and physical and mental health can assist in treatment and healing.

DNA Basics, Transfer, Contamination, and Discovery by Cynthia Cale

Cynthia Cale will discuss the basics of DNA and DNA testing. The talk will then move to DNA transfer and studies showing how that can be accomplished. Cale will discuss how to look for facts in discovery in a DNA case that may affect an innocent transfer argument.

Cross-Examination Preparation with Prof. Buzz Scherr

Prof. Buzz Scherr will discuss preparation generally for expert testimony with a focus on DNA. Scherr will discuss how to distill helpful facts from DNA materials in discovery and incorporate those elements in your cross examination, as well as learned treatises. This presentation assumes the DNA evidence will be admissible and focus mainly on the types of cross examination that can be done with a DNA analyst.
