NACDL Midwinter Meeting & Seminar: “Preventing Wrongful Convictions” – February 13-16, 2019

NACDL’s 2019 Midwinter Meeting & Seminar,”Preventing Wrongful Convictions: Eyewitness Mis-Identification & False Confessions” will be held at the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown, Phoenix, AZ, February 13-16, 2019.

Mistaken eyewitness identifications and false and coerced confessions are two of the three leading causes of wrongful convictions; according to the Innocence Project’s study of 325 exonerations. 74% of wrongfully convicted cases involved mistaken identification, and 27% of those came as a result of a false confession. This cannot continue.

In many jurisdictions, court rulings on the admissibility of identification evidence lag hopelessly behind science. On the other hand, there are recent breakthroughs in several states.

This groundbreaking seminar will offer a full day of training on both of these important issues.

On the first day, you will learn how to litigate the admissibility of identifications using the latest psychological research so you can actively work on changing the law, how to work with and cross-examine experts, and try a winning case.

The second day will focus exclusively on false confessions; experts in the field will discuss and show videos of how law enforcement interrogators coerce false confessions, while experienced trial lawyers will outline winning cross-examination techniques, trial strategies, and how to select a jury that can best accept your theory of the case.

Escape the cold in February 2019, and join your international NACDL colleagues in sunny Phoenix, Arizona, to educate yourself on the most up-to-date legal challenges, scientific research and trial techniques to prevent the innocent from wrongfully serving time.
