Webinar: Partnering with P&As to Improve Educational Outcomes for Youth with Disabilities in the Juvenile Justice System
Tuesday, October 3 at 4-5:00 pm ET
An estimated 30-50% of those in the juvenile justice system are identified as youth with disabilities. Accordingly, Protection and Advocacy Systems (P&As) — which work at the state level to protect individuals with disabilities by advocating for and empowering them – can play a critical and integral role in assisting advocates to improve the quality of educational services provided to these youth in juvenile justice placements.
Learn more about the role and function of P&As, the scope of their investigation authority, and how litigators can use and request P&A reports and investigations as part of their litigation strategy. This webinar will be recorded.
Presenters will also address the associational standing of P&As, applicable rules and practices governing co-counseling, and how litigators can partner with P&As to inform and assert legal claims.
Presenters:
- Diane Smith Howard, Senior Staff Attorney, National Disabilities Rights Network
- Eden Heilman, Senior Supervising Attorney of the New Orleans Children’s Rights team, Southern Poverty Law Center
- Maura McInerney, Senior Attorney, Education Law Center (Facilitator)
