Designing/Reforming Your Tribal Juvenile Justice System – Big Picture Considerations

Earlier this month, this course was presented by the Hon. Pat Sekaquaptewa with guest presenter Lauren van Shilfgaarde. The course provides participants an introductory instructional experience to support development or enhancement of Tribal juvenile justice codes, policy, and procedures. The course covers topics such as design, philosophy, and integrity of the juvenile justice system within a Tribal community. The course provides an emphasis to support developing Tribal Juvenile Healing to Wellness Courts or those interested.

Session Objectives:

  • Understand the parts and purposes of the various processes that comprise the juvenile justice system.
  • Survey the juvenile delinquency model and status offense court process.
  • Discuss the legacy of tribal statutory provisions and special programs.
